Vijya Dashmi

Vijay - Victorious
Dashmi - Tenth day

Aaso Sudh 10

There are many stories associated with this day:

This is the day when Lord Rama conquered the evil King of Lanka - Ravana. This day is celebrated by burning the effigy of Ravana and re-enacting the event.

Also on this day, after 12 years of exile and one year of hiding, the five Pandavas, Yudhishtir, Bhima, Arjun, Nakula and Sahadev picked up their weapons hidden in the Shami tree to do battle with Dhuryodhan and the Kauravas.

In the temples Vijaya Dashmi is celebrated by dressing the idols in battle clothing and weapons and singing praises of Lord Rama's victory of Ravana. Bhagwan is seated on an elephant and dressed up with a sword, to represent Lord Rama's victory.

The essence of this festival is to remember that good always overcomes evil. You will always defeat the evil inside you if you side with God and true Dharma.
